The Eurosystem launched Pontes on 21 September, enabling wholesale transactions in tokenised assets to settle in central bank money. The European Central Bank describes an initial service offering, with further features and longer operating hours to follow gradually; full implementation is expected by 2028.

The practical question is the cash side of a digital-asset transaction. Representing a security as a token does not, by itself, specify how payment reaches the seller. Pontes addresses that settlement layer. This is infrastructure news, not a Bitcoin price signal or a guarantee about an asset’s investment performance.

For Israeli and Gulf financial-technology businesses considering European workflows, the announcement provides a development to assess with potential banking partners. It does not establish that any particular company is eligible or connected. Participation, supported transactions and operational readiness still require separate verification.
